These plates are being sold strictly as decorative or display pieces. They feature significant, visible crazing throughout the glaze on the front and back, which is typical for creamware of this era. The History of the Wedgwood Piranesi Series

• The Artwork: The central images are high-fidelity transfers of 18th-century copperplate etchings by Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720–1778). He was a legendary Italian artist and architect famous for his atmospheric, dramatic prints of Roman ruins titled Vedute di Roma (Views of Rome). His work heavily influenced the “Grand Tour” travelers of Europe.
• The 1950 Charity Release: This specific tableware series was custom-manufactured by Wedgwood in England around 1950. It was commissioned as a special charity fundraiser for disabled children under the auspices of the Archbishop of Boston, Richard J. Cushing. The plates were originally distributed in the United States by the historic Boston importer Jones, McDuffee & Stratton.
• The Design: The series is built on Wedgwood’s iconic “Edme” shape, which features a creamy Queen’s Ware body, a ribbed/fluted border, and a subtle laurel leaf edge. It was produced in a few distinct monochrome transfer colors, most notably sepia brown and stark black.
