• Hand-Painted Floral Motifs: Typically pink roses or lotus flowers with green foliage.
• Gold Accents: Extensive use of gold gilt on the rim, neck, and for floral detailing.
• Moriage: A technique involving applied strings of clay, often used for raised decoration or “beading”.
• Quality: Authentic “Nippon-era” pieces (1891–1921) are generally recognized for high-quality hand-painting, while pre-1891 pieces can be slightly gray or use different clay techniques.
• Before the McKinley Tariff Act of 1891, Japanese export porcelain like the vase shown was often unmarked or marked with Japanese characters (Kanji). Pieces from this era are sometimes referred to by collectors as “Pre-Nippon”.
• The Japanese mark at the bottom is most likely the artist.
