This signed first edition paperback of Patti Smith’s Babel, published in 1978 by G.P. Putnam’s Sons, measures roughly 6 x 9 x .6 inches and runs 202 pages. It is an eclectic collection of her early poetry, prose, song lyrics, photographs, and drawings.

The book shows normal age with little damage.

Patti Smith’s signature is on the front page in blue ink and accompanied by her famous “Radio Ethiopia Field Marshall” initials. She added a mountain that is stylized with bold, jagged, minimalist strokes, reflecting her deep affinity for nature and mystical, William Blake-esque symbolism. On the mountain is a cross drawn as a simple, elongated Latin cross, echoing themes of martyrdom, religious iconography, or personal spirituality that frequently thread through her poetry. Because Smith rarely signs books exactly the same way twice, editions containing sketches like these are highly sought-after collector’s items.
