The Window of the Poet in New York with the Hand of the Saint

This evocative limited-edition print by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Aldo Rossi captures the intersection of monumental urbanism, personal domesticity, and a sort-of spirituality. The work features a view of the New York City skyline, including the prominent  World Trade Center towers and a huge hand framed by a window with the silhouette of a man looking on. 1994.

Printed by letterpress on 8.5 x 11” Rives paper, the etching is initialed and dated by Aldo Rossi in a numbered edition of 250. This is number 239. Unframed. Paper size: 8.5″w x 11″. Image size: 3″w x 5″. Signature: .75″w x 1″ by hand and not in the plate.

A print from this series of 250 was included in each limited edition slipcase set of the books Aldo Rossi: Drawings and Paintings and Aldo Rossi: Architecture published by Princeton Architectural Press.

The composition is characterized by Rossi’s signature motifs:

  • The “Mano del Santo” (Hand of the Saint): A large, ethereal green hand superimposed over the cityscape, a recurring surrealist element in Rossi’s work symbolizing a protective or divine presence.
  • Domestic Still Life: In the foreground, a silhouette stands beside a table featuring one of Rossi’s iconic coffee pot designs (reminiscent of his “La Conica” for Alessi), bridging the gap between small-scale objects and grand architecture.
